Scum of the Brave Gets TV Anime by Studio OLM

A TV anime adaptation of Scum of the Brave (Yusha no Kuzu), originally written by Rocket Shokai and adapted into a manga by Nakashima723, has been officially announced. Studio OLM ( A teaser visual and a special promotional video have been released to commemorate the announcement.

About Scum of the Brave

The story is set in the mid-21st century in Tokyo, where the underworld is ruled by mafia members who have undergone Ether Enhancement Surgery to transform into “Demon Kings.” These individuals wield immense power, and so bounty hunters known as “Heroes” have emerged to combat them. Heroes enhance their ether abilities using a drug called E3 to stand a chance.

The protagonist, the “Grim Reaper” Yashiro, is a hero operating in Tokyo when he unexpectedly encounters a high school girl who aspires to become a hero herself. The series is originally a novel by Rocket Shokai, who also writes the Sentenced to Be a Hero novel series (which is getting an anime this year).

Scum of the Brave was later adapted into a manga by Nakashima 723 and is currently serialized in Comic Border.

Anime Production, Creator Comments & Illustrations

The anime adaptation is being produced by OLM, the studio known for its work on Pokémon, Komi Can’t Communicate and The Apothecary Diaries (in collaboration with TOHO animation STUDIO). To celebrate the announcement, both Nakashima 723 and Rocket Shokai released comments about the anime:

Additionally, a reprint project for the Scum of the Brave novel was announced, featuring new illustrations by artist toi8. A newly drawn illustration by toi8 has also been unveiled as part of the celebration.

On the anime’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, a promotional giveaway campaign is also being held. One lucky winner will receive a complete set of the Scum of the Brave manga (Volumes 1-7), while ten others will win a B2-sized poster featuring the teaser visual.
